Wales’ World Cup play-off match vs Austria will go ahead

Wales’ World Cup play-off semi final vs Austria will go ahead as planned on March 24th.

Scotland vs Ukraine was postponed earlier this week, and a decision regarding Wales’ match was unknown.

However it is confirmed that the semi-final tie will take place as planned at the Cardiff City Stadium on March 24th.

The Football Association of Wales said: “The FAW supports Fifa’s decision in this matter and stands in solidarity with Ukraine and reiterates its condemnation for the use of force and the atrocities being committed by Russia,”

Ukraine requested a postponement against Scotland due to the invasion of their homeland by Russia.

Ukraine reached the quarter finals of Euro 2020 after coming third in their group with Austria, Netherlands and North Macedonia.

FIFA accepted the request, and the semi-final tie will be moved forward – with beliefs it will be played in the Nations League window in June.

A statement from FIFA said:

“Alternative fixtures for teams in the March window are being explored by the relevant parties.,” Fifa said in a statement.

“Similarly, the details of rescheduled fixtures will be announced in due course and the international match calendar window of June will be adapted as necessary for the teams concerned once these details have been finalised.”

The play-off final date will be set in accordance to the completion of the Scotland vs Ukraine semi final.

The final may also take place in the June Nations League window.

Wales are due to host Belgium and Netherlands in the summer, so these fixtures may have to be moved.

FAW chief executive Neil Mooney has publicly supported Ukraine following the conflict started by Russia.

“We are a football family at the Football Association of Wales. We love football but we’re also socially conscious as well,” he said.

“Like anybody else we’re appalled and disgusted by what’s happening right now with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

The World Cup takes place from November 21st to December 18th, with the final tournament draw on April 1st.
