Wrexham complete double signing

WREXHAM has announced the signings of centre back Shaun Brisley and forward Liam McAlinden.

McAlinden, 27, is a product of the Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy, and has represented both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland at under-21 level.

He played for FC Halifax Town and Stockport County in the National League in the 2019-20 season, scoring a combined 12 goals for the two clubs, and was most recently part of Morecambe’s promotion-winning team in League Two.

His final goal for the Club came in the play-off semi-final first leg at Tranmere Rovers, helping the Shrimps to the Final – and ultimately to promotion.

On signing for Wrexham, McAlinden said: “I’m delighted to get the deal over the line. I spoke to the manager last week and once he explained the project here I was keen to get involved.

“From the outside looking in, it’s been really interesting to see what is happening at Wrexham so as soon as I knew the Club was interested, it was a no-brainer to get it over line.

“I’ve played in the National League before, and enjoyed a consistent season. I’d describe myself as a hard-working forward, I like to get in behind defenders and hopefully I can bring something to excite the fans once they’re back at the Racecourse Ground.”

Manager Phil Parkinson said: “Liam’s an interesting player. He can play wide and just off a target man. He’s a good age, good technical ability and he’s mobile.

“We’ve had to compete with some league clubs to bring Liam here and I’m delighted to get that over the line.”

Brisley, 31, has signed a two-year deal at Wrexham, following the expiry of his previous contract at League Two Port Vale.

The tall, physical centre-back has also previously played permanently for Macclesfield Town, Peterborough United, Carlisle United and Notts County.

He had previously spent his entire career in the Football League, and he won the Football League Trophy with Peterborough United in 2014.

And the Macclesfield-born defender is excited for the challenge of restoring the Red Dragons to the Football League too.

Upon signing, he said: “I’m delighted. Once I met with the manager, and he explained the really exciting project here, I couldn’t wait to join.

“Wrexham are a big club who don’t deserve to be where they are now. With the new owners and the project in front of them, I want to play my part in getting us back to the Football League.

“It’s massive to be coming into something with a lot of hype around it, but the main objective is, of course, promotion to the Football League.”

On the new addition, manager Phil Parkinson added: “All supporters can see we need out-and out defenders, and Shaun is just the start of rebuilding that defence.

“He’s got a lot of experience at Football League level, and he’s good in both boxes. At any level, you need a defender who – when the ball comes into the box – will be the first to put his head on it and Shaun will certainly bring that.

“I’m looking forward to working with him.”
