Herbie take derby spoils

Hakin United 2
Herbrandston 3

HerbrandstonHERBRANDSTON inflicted only a second league defeat of the season on leaders Hakin in a fiercely contested derby game on Saturday (Jan 3). Herbie took the lead only to be pegged back by the Champions, but an own goal and a second half effort from Mark Jones gave the visitors an excellent win. Herbie opened the scoring in the first half when Scott Reid scored a penalty after Jason Clarke had been brought down in the box. Ashley Bevan equalised to make it 1-1 soon after, before Nicky Woodrow put the Vikings ahead.

However on the stroke of half time Herbie equalised when Hayden Dimond’s shot was deflected into the net by an unfortunate Hakin defender. With twenty minutes left Herbie took the lead when Shane Walsh won the ball on the right hand side before crossing for Mark Jones who slotted the ball into the top corner. Herbie thought they should have had another penalty late on when Dimond went down in the box, but the referee waved away the appeals. The visitors held on for the win which takes them level on points with Goodwick United in fourth place.

Hakin missed the chance to extend their lead over second placed Merlins Bridge but are still five points ahead of their closest challengers. The Vikings travel to Angle for their next game, while Herbrandston take on Narberth. Herbrandston: Gareth Marshallsay, Mike Evans, Sean Williams, Daniel Armstrong, Daniel Munn, Mark Jones, Craig Nicholson, Jason Clarke, Shane Walsh, Scott Reid, Hayden Dimond. Subs: Marc Gelona, Darren Devonald, Alex Ouzman.
