WREXHAM AFC has been celebrating its long-awaited promotion to League Two, following a 3-1 win against Boreham Wood. The result confirmed the Red Dragons’ automatic promotion, with one game left in their National League campaign.
Wrexham was purchased in November 2020 by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds and writer and producer Rob McElhenney, best known for his work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The duo brought a massive wave of excitement to the club, with the purchase drawing international attention and bringing in new fans from all over the world.
Since the purchase, Reynolds and McElhenney have invested more than £10m in restructuring the club from top to bottom. The duo’s spending has dwarfed that of their National League rivals, and the team’s training facilities have been improved with the addition of a new performance gym built on the ground’s premises. McElhenney added, “I think we can hear how it feels to the town and that’s what’s most important to us. I think this is a moment of catharsis for them and celebration, and for us to be welcomed into their community and to be welcomed into this experience has been the honour of my life.”
The team’s success has also drawn the attention of the British royal family, with the Prince of Wales taking to Twitter to congratulate the team. “Congratulations @Wrexham_AFC! A club with such amazing history, looking forward to a very exciting future back in the Football League. Doing Wales proud,” the tweet read.
Wrexham fans have been overjoyed at the club’s success, with one fan hailing Reynolds and McElhenney for making “dreaming possible” for the team. The team’s budget and spending power have allowed them to bring in some of the top players in the country, and their success has been a testament to the duo’s commitment to building a winning team.
