Kilgetty secure promotion to Division 1

KILGETTY secured promotion to Division 1 on Monday night (Apr 29) as they beat Johnston 2-0 in the final game of the Pembrokeshire Football League Season.

It was a winner takes all promotion decider with Johnston needing a win to go up while Kilgetty knew they just needed a point to reach the first division.

Kilgetty had moved into third place on Saturday (Apr 27), enough to secure promotion with Merlins Bridge seconds sitting second, with a 2-1 win over Division 2 Champions Fishguard Sports. Jordan Gorman scored both goals for Kilgetty in that game and he was at it again on Monday scoring another double to send his side up.

It means a return to the top division for Kilgetty for the first time since the 2010/11 season.

Kilgetty Coach Robbie Beynon said he was ‘delighted’ to get the win against a tough team in Johnston.

He saw his side play second best in the first half, however, as the Tigers’ passing and movement caused the home side a lot of problems.

Kilgetty had earlier chances to go ahead but it was Jordan Gorman who put the home side ahead at the break as they caught the Tigers on the counter attack.

In the second half the home side continued to frustrate their opponents limiting them to a couple of chances.

Kilgetty’s Henry Lawrence then saw a shot saved by Johnston keeper Jim Payne but Gorman was in the right place to tap home the rebound.

The home side were awarded a penalty late on when Ollie Gamble was fouled but Jordan Gormann missed the opportunity to grab a hat trick.

Despite that miss, Kilgetty saw the game out and celebrated a return to the top division of Pembrokeshire football.

Coach Beynon added: “When I came in to take this job over, Kilgetty football was in a bit of a mess if I’m honest, happy to be lingering in the bottom half of division 3, so may aim was in three years to try and get us back to Division 1.

“I’ve had to bring some players in to do this but the main core are Kilgetty boys and youngsters at that. Two cup finals and two promotions in the three years I’ve been doing it is a great achievement for our club.

“Being a Kilgetty lad there’s nobody more proud of our achievements and I would like to thank Lukas Gamble and all the players I’ve had over the 3 years for all their hard work and we will give it our best shot back in the top Division of Pembrokeshire football. Over the moon is a understatement.”
