CWMGORS made a winning start to their new Division 3 West Central campaign with a thrilling Swansea Valley derby victory thanks to a last-gasp Andrew Mason penalty at Parc y Bryn.
The home side kicked off the new league season, and soon took the lead with an early third-minute penalty.
Cwmgors’ first real attack yielded a penalty, but it was sent wide, before the Parc y Bryn men grabbed the opening try of the afternoon on 15 minutes.
A second Cwmgors penalty sailed wide, but it was third-time-lucky when Andrew Mason finally found the target to put his side on the scoreboard on the half hour.
The visitors finished the half with real purpose, ending the half with a purple patch of attacking play; firstly, following some excellent work from the forwards, Joseff Davies finished off the move for the try, Mason adding the extras to put ‘Gors ahead at 10-8.
On the stroke of half time, it was the backs this time that made the inroads, and it was Owen Davies who was on hand to go over the try line for a Mason-converted seven-pointer.
The visitors restarted after the break, but they were hauled back when Cwmllynfell secured the opening try with a well-worked corner score.
The home side sent a penalty wide minutes later, but kept on the front foot and soon regained the lead in a real see-sawing match with another try.
But the ding-dong basketball-style flavour continued, and a fine Cwmgors counter-attack from deep inside their own half created the space for Steff Phillips to finish off over the whitewash.
The lead was short-lived though as the home side kicked a penalty, but with virtually the last play, the referee awarded the Cherries a last-gasp penalty, and Andrew Mason kept his nerve to slot it through the posts to conclude an excellent derby clash.
Cwmgors return in a fortnight with a home fixture against Cwmafan on November 27.
