Last gasp try gives RGC victory over Vale

RGC moved up to fourth place in the East Group of the Premiership Cup on Friday night (Nov 19) as they beat Ebbw Vale 21-22, thanks to a last gasp try.

Both sides looked to play attacking rugby from the off but there was no scoring in the opening stages.

RGC were then dealt a blow as they had Tom Hughes sent off.

Despite being down to 14 men the visitors took the lead as Sam Rogers landed a penalty.

Ebbw Vale then got the first try of the game as they won the ball back and Joe Peard went over under the posts. Evan Lloyd then added the extras for a 7-3 lead.

Before half time RGC set up a driving maul which went on to the line before Brodie Coghlan touched the ball down. Rogers added the extras to give the visitors a 7-10 lead at the interval.

Ebbw Vale scored the first try of the second half as Alex Gray went over and Lloyd added the extras, extending Vale’s lead to 14-10.

Both sides continued to play attacking rugby but it was the home side who got the next score.

Ewan Rosser kicked ahead and Lewis Young collected before touching down. Lloyd again added the extras to make it 21-10 to the Vale.

RGC hit back though and scored a try when Efan Jones spotted a gap and ran through to score. Rogers added the extras to bring his side to within four points.

It looked as if the Vale might hold on but RGC attacked with one last chance to score and after a number of phases Zac Clow dived over for the try.

It was an excellent victory for RGC who never gave up despite being down to 14 men for 65 minutes.

The win lifts RGC up to fourth place in the East Group, two points behind third placed Merthyr.

On Saturday, November 27, they play fifth placed Pontypridd who sit just two points behind them in the table.
