Llanelli earn crucial win

LLANELLI moved out of the bottom two in Division 2 of the South Wales Premier League as they earned a crucial 10-wicket win over Malpas on Saturday (Jul 21).

Malpas won the toss and elected to bat first but Llanelli bowled well to restrict them to just 165-8 from their 50 overs.

Steven Devonald trapped opener James Francis leg before wicket early on and Alex Symmons also had Ryan Ward caught and bowled for a score of 18.

Vaughan Thomas also struck as he had Michael Martin caught by Benjamin Edwards on a score of 11 and Symmons then claimed his second wicket as he had Steve Provis caught by David Richards.

Andrew Ross made 17 before he was caught by Craig Howells off the bowling of Kyle Griffiths and Ross Ward was then bowled by Iwan Rees.

David Martin failed to score as he was then caught by Rhidian Morgan off the bowling of Kyle Griffiths.

That left Malpas on 83-7 but a score of 19 from Benito Carnevale, before he was caught by Iwan Rees off the bowling of Richards, took the score past 100 runs.

Llanelli were unable to take any further wickets as Peter Mason finished not out on 39 with four boundaries and Christian Rose finished not out on 25 with two fours and a six.

That set Llanelli 166 to win and a patient innings from both Marcus Leaf and Iwan Rees saw them to victory.

Leaf hit twelve fours in a knock of 63 while Rees finished not out on 82 with sixteen fours.

Their score was also helped along by 21 extras as Malpas searched in vain for a breakthrough.

Llanelli will now look to keep themselves out of the bottom two and on Saturday (Jul 28), they are at home to Swansea.
