Llanelli earn much needed win

LLANELLI earned a much needed win on Friday night (Feb 8) as they beat Carmarthen Quins 18-12 after the Quins had missed a late conversion which would have put them ahead.

The home side were on top early on at Parc Y Scarlets but were unable to find a way though.

With nearly twenty minutes gone, Llanelli were awarded a penalty after a series of plays on the Quins 22m line and Ioan Hughes stepped up to give his side a 3-0 lead.

However, that lead was short lived as the Quins scored the first try of the game when a mistake at the lineout let Dylan Morgan in to score near the posts. Aled Thomas then added the conversion for a 3-7 lead.

Shortly before the half hour mark Llanelli were back in front as a driving maul saw Nathan Hart touch the ball down. Hughes missed the conversion and then nearly atoned for his miss but his break for the line was stopped.

At half time the home side held an 8-7 lead and they came out for the second half looking to extend it.

After a series of plays close to the line Hughes went over to score Llanelli’s second try but he missed the conversion and they now held a 13-7 lead.

Both sides battled away for some time looking to break through but defences were on top until the last few minutes of the game.

Dale Ford found some space and the former Llanelli man dived over to bring the Quins to within one point. The conversion would have put the Quins ahead but it was wide, much to the relief of the home side.

They then made the Quins pay for that miss as they scored their third try through Josh Weeds and although the conversion was missed they had sealed an 18-12 victory.

The win for Llanelli moves them up to thirteenth place in the Premiership table and on Saturday (Feb 16) they are at home again as they take on second from bottom Bargoed.

The Quins will look to bounce back as they host Aberavon.
