Rooks through to last eight

CAREW earned their place in the quarter finals of the West Wales Cup as they beat 10-man Maltsters Sports 4-0 on Saturday (Feb 2).

The Rooks, beaten semi-finalists in last year’s competition, went ahead after a Lloyd Hughes corner was only cleared as far as Shaun Whitfield who half-volleyed into the back of the net.

Moments later it was 2-0 as Iwan Izzard, Scott Ferney and Jordan Richards all combined well in a good team move which set up Sam Christopher to smash the ball home. It was a welcome return to the scoresheet for Sam who has been out of action for some time with an injury.

There was a scrappy start to the second half as the Swansea League Division 1 side looked to get back into the game.

In their eagerness to get back into it a number of hard tackles were flying in and it soon saw one of their players shown a straight red card for a high two-footed tackle.

Jordan Richards then made the tie safe for the Rooks with a good finish from a Sam Christopher cross.

Scott Ferney added Carew’s fourth as he smashed home after Izzard unselfishly set him up.

It was an excellent win for the Rooks who will be looking to go one better than last year and reach the final of the tournament.

Before their quarter final tie, they will return to league action on Saturday (Feb 9), as they host Pennar Robins.
