Rugby match raises £4000 for charity

THE rugby match between a Pembrokeshire XV and a Valero XV has raised £4000 for charity.

It was played on Saturday (Feb 26) in front of a big crowd at Pembroke RFC with the final resulting going the way of the county side who won 36-15.

Clubs from across the county were represented as they put on a great show for those who had come to watch.

The two sides had previously locked horns in March 2020, prior to the start of the first UK lockdown, with the County side winning on that occasion too.

Saturday’s game was just two minutes old when Lloyd Davies opened the scoring for the County side. Nico Setaro (Whitland) then added the extras.

Lewys Gibby then went over for the County’s second try for a 12-0 lead.

The Valero team hit back though as Lewis Davies went over from close range. This time the conversion was missed.

Jordan Asparassa also went over and although the conversion was missed again the score now stood at 12-10 to the County side.

Shortly before the break though the County side hit back with some excellent play to set up Steve Martin (Milford Haven) to score. Setaro then added the extras to make it 19-10 at the break.

There was a large crowd watching the game

In the second Dan Jenkins (Milford Haven) scored a brace of tries to give the county side a commanding lead.

Valero came back again though as Mark Boswell (Pembroke) touched down to make it 29-15.

Pembrokeshire had the last say in the game though as Setaro went over and he then added the drop-goal conversion to complete the scoring.

It was an excellent game of rugby with the real winners being those who will benefit from the money raised.

It will go to Valero’s Charity of the year, The Pembrokeshire Cancer Support Group.

Organiser Gareth Scourfield, who also coached the Valero team, said: “It was a fantastic day, enjoyed by all, it was great to see so many people there.”
