Fishguard 10 – Lampeter 11

A SINGLE point was enough to knock out Fishguard and Goodwick from a competition they have a strong history in, as Lampeter applied some gamesmanship and underhand tactics to counter the Seagulls dominant scrum.

The home side scored first after a frantic first 15 minutes, as James Griffiths slotted a penalty after a period of pressure. But it was Lampeter who started the brightest, with their pick and go proving affective against the homeside.

Fishguard may have been suffering from ring rust, with a lack of games since the New Year began, and Lampeter scored the first try as Trytan Lloyd touched down.

With the score at 3-5 at the break, the second half was sure to be a battle.

After the break Lampeter’s Arwel Thomas kicked a penalty before Fishguard began to dig deep and complete phases, moving up the muddy field.

It was here where Lampeter’s gamesmanship came to the fray, as they opted to go to uncontested scrums, even though a prop was available on the bench. This shifted momentum in the game, leaving the typically powerful Seagulls scrum completely useless.

With the crowd and the odd coaching staff angered at this move, Fishguard powered on and from a pick and go, replacement blindside flanker Owain Morgans touched down for a try, to the cheers of the home crowd. James Griffiths added the conversion, giving his side a two point lead going into the final few minutes.

The Fishguard defence then looked solid, as they turned over the ball on their own try line and bullied Lampeter backwards towards the ten meter line, before the referee adjudged a Fishguard forward to be off-side at the ruck.

Arwel Thomas then stepped up to break Fishguard’s heart, with the ball just clearing the crossbar.

Fishguard, who can now concentrate fully on their league performance, and will look to bounce back against Milford this weekend (Jan 24).
