Stannett’s extra time winner seals Division 2 Cup for Herbie

HERBRANDSTON won the Division 2 Cup on Tuesday night as they beat Milford United 3-2 after extra time.

Herbie came from behind to level the game twice and Callum Stannett’s extra time winner sealed Cup glory for Stuart McDonald’s side.

There was an early chance for Milford as they won a corner but after it wasn’t cleared properly the ball fell to Scott Griffiths but he saw his effort saved by Herbie keeper James Manson.

With 25 minutes gone Milford were awarded a penalty. Liam Parr stepped up to take it and, although Manson guessed the right way, he put enough power on it to bury it in the bottom left corner.

Herbie then saw a header go over the bar before equalising on the stroke of half time as Callum Stannett set up Craig Hewer to score to level the game at 1-1.

In the second half, Stannett flicked the ball on for Scott Reid but his shot on the turn went over the bar.

Milford took the lead with 20 minutes to go as Sam Davies scored.

Herbie looked to get back in the game and with two minutes to go they were awarded a corner. It wasn’t dealt with and Daniel Armstrong was on hand to poke the ball in.

That sent the game into extra time but after an even opening fifteen minutes, the score remained 2-2.

The prospect of penalties loomed over but with seven minutes to go another Herbie corner wasn’t cleared and the ball fell to Stannett on the penalty spot who fired low into the net to give his side the lead.

Herbie were able to hold on and the final whistle sparked joyous scenes amongst the players.
