Stars edge out Wasps

LLANGWM travelled to Llanelli on Saturday (Sept 15) to face New Dock Stars in the first round of the WRU Bowl in what turned out to be a very even and well contested game.

Llangwm took the lead early on when Spencer Rourke crossed the line after good work by Ben Goodridge.

However, as was to be the case for the entire match the home side hit back. They took the lead briefly before Llangwm number 8 Hicks made a break after two good hand-offs and ran over the full back to score under the posts, allowing Hayman to convert.

Llangwm looked threatening with ball in hand but conceded at vital times. Hicks’ strong running was causing issues for the home side’s defence, with good support from Lloyd and Hayman at 10 and 12.

When the home side were awarded a penalty try the game looked dead for the visitors with skipper Gethin Thomas in the bin.

However, an interception try for Louis Murphy and another try for Hicks, who ran at an angle on to an excellent pass by Hayman before crashing over the line from 10 yards, gave Llangwm hope.

Minutes later again Hayman looked for Hicks who was five yards out from the try line with nobody in front of him when the pass was deliberately knocked on.

The visitors felt a penalty try and a yellow card was deserved but it wasn’t to be as the Stars sealed an excellent 41-29 win.

Coach Rob Neil could be proud of what he saw but also frustrated as the game was there for the taking.

On Saturday (Sept 22), New Dock Stars return to league action with a home game against Betws while Llangwm are away to Laugharne.
