TURKEY Manager Stefan Kuntz is anticipating a tough challenge from Cymru in their upcoming match in Samsun, following Cymru’ disappointing defeat to Armenia. While Turkey secured a 3-2 victory over Latvia, allowing them to overtake Cymru and claim the top spot in their Euro 2024 qualifying group, Kuntz acknowledges that Cymru’ wounded pride will make the upcoming match more challenging. Kuntz, a former German striker, stated, “Considering the pride of the Welsh players, I think it will be a bit more difficult than Latvia. But we are focused on how to win and in the starting 11, I will include different players from the Latvian match.”
The situation is crucial for Turkey as they aim to secure the second qualifying spot in their group, with Croatia expected to take the top position due to their absence from June qualifiers. Kuntz believes that this circumstance could provide a significant advantage for Turkey over Cymru in the battle for qualification. He said, “We know what we need to do to apply pressure on them. The boys are motivated to show what they can do, the aim is to qualify for this tournament next summer. I know the quality of our team is good and I want to take advantage of the situation.”
It is worth noting that Cymru defeated Turkey 2-0 at the delayed 2020 European Championship, preventing Turkey from advancing to the knockout stage. Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts were the heroes of that match, scoring the goals in Baku. Reflecting on Cymru’ recent losses of key personnel Gareth Bale and Joe Allen since the World Cup, Kuntz stated, “It is a team we still respect. I don’t know their game plan, but we have our plans and we want to take advantage of the situation.”
Looking ahead to the match in Samsun, Galatasaray defender Abdulkerim Bardakci expressed confidence in the team and anticipated great support from the fans. He said, “We will see a great support behind us in Samsun. I told my friends it was a city with a love of football and a city with passion. We want to take one more step to reach our dream and play in the Euro finals.”
With both teams aiming for victory, the match between Turkey and Cymru promises to be an intense battle as Cymru seeks redemption for their recent defeat, while Turkey strives to secure a crucial win to boost their chances of qualifying for the Euro finals.
