Warriors prove too strong for Ospreys

OSPREYS suffered their fourth defeat of the United Rugby Championship (URC) season on Saturday (Jan 8) as they were beaten 38-19 by Glasgow.

Gareth Anscombe put the Ospreys ahead early on with a penalty before Ross Thompson levelled with a penalty of his own.

The visitors regained the lead on 11 minutes with another penalty from Anscombe but it was Glasgow who got the game’s first try.

Cole Forbes raced over the line and Thompson added the extras to give his side a 10-6 lead.

That became 10-9 moments later when Anscombe added his third penalty of the game.

Just a minute later though, Sione Tuipulotu got over the try line and Thompson again converted to make it 17-6.

Anscombe continued his perfect record with the boot with his fourth penalty but the Ospreys still trailed 17-12 when the half time whistle went.

The opening minutes of the second half were an even affair but it was Glasgow who got the first try of the half.

Josh McKay touched the ball down and Thompson added the extras to put the Scottish side 12 points ahead.

Shortly after the hour mark Tuipulotu ran over for his second try of the afternoon and Thompson was again successful with the conversion to make it 31-12.

The Ospreys did not give up despite the deficit and with eight minutes to go Dan Evans drove over the line and Anscombe was again successful with the conversion.

The Warriors though went up the other end and scored another try again converted by Thompson.

There was a landmark occasion for Lloyd Ashley as he came on to make his 150th appearance for the Ospreys.

The game finished 38-19 to Glasgow, who moved up to fourth in the table, above the Ospreys, courtesy of their five-point win.

The Ospreys are next in action on Saturday, January 15, when they are due to take on Racing 92 at the Swansea.Com stadium in the European Champions Cup.

That game will be played behind closed doors as Welsh Government restrictions mean that fans are unable to attend.
