The Current State of Addiction and Substance Misuse in Wales

Particularly in South Wales, substance misuse and addiction is, unfortunately, a prevalent problem. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the current state of alcohol addiction and substance misuse in Wales, and what is being done about this significant issue.

There Has Been an Increase in Alcohol and Drug Use Amongst School Aged Children

In 2022-23, there were 869 school exclusions that were the result of alcohol or drug use. This number is a dramatic increase from 2020-21 figures (up 119%), and marks the highest number of exclusions since 2011-12.

Hospital Admissions For Alcohol and Drug Related Conditions Have Reduced

Despite more young people being excluded from school for substance and alcohol-related issues, in 2022-23, the number of hospital admissions for alcohol-specific conditions in those aged under 25 saw a 34.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Wales also had an 11.1% decrease in admissions for illicit drugs.

Similarly, admissions for adults aged 25-49, for both alcohol and illicit drug poisonings, decreased by 14.1% and 16.4%, respectively, from the previous year.

Adults Over 50 Are At High Risk for Alcohol Addiction

65% of those admitted to hospital in 2022-23 for alcohol-related conditions were over the age of 50 – an increase from the previous year. Alongside this, 80.1% of assessments within specialist substance misuse services were for alcohol.

Opioids Are the Most Problematic Substance

In 2022-23, 1,353 individuals were admitted to hospital for conditions related to opioid misuse. However, this is a decrease of 17.5% from the previous year. Cannabinoids were the second highest substance group, with 1,097 hospital admissions in 2022-23.

What Can Be Done About Addiction and Substance Abuse in Wales?

Help is available for those struggling with addiction. This includes this rehab in Wales, which offers 24/7 care and support from qualified and fully trained professionals.

In addition, in 2022, The South Wales police released a substance misuse and harm reduction strategy, aiming to prevent the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol in local communities. The strategy primarily focuses on restricting the supply of illicit drugs, ensuring there are sufficient and appropriate drug treatment services, and applying a progressive approach to drug intervention.

If you know someone who is dealing with drug or alcohol related issues, the best thing you can do is listen, be non-judgemental, and offer support where you can.
