Wales Air Ambulance launches memory castle to celebrate lives of lost loved ones

WALES AIR AMBULANCE is inviting people to celebrate the life of a lost loved one by sponsoring their name on a specially designed Forget-Me-Not memory castle.

The exclusive floral tribute will be one of 30 decorated castle sculptures that will be on display at the much-anticipated Castles in the Sky public art trail in Swansea this summer.

The free family event is the first of its kind in Swansea and aims to attract thousands of people to the city for 10 weeks from July 8 to September 16.

The Wales Air Ambulance is hosting the Wild in Art project, an initiative that has become an international success story by raising charitable funds through its creative and community-focused public art.

The Flowers of Remembrance campaign will see the Forget-Me-Not Castle designed and created by Narberth artist Diana R Brook, who will hand paint individual loved one’s names on the petal of a forget-me-not flower.

The petite and delicate flower is traditionally associated with remembrance as well as love and friendship. Not only will people be able to buy a space on the castle and see their loved one’s name on the summer trail, the remembrance castle will be moved and displayed outside the Wales Air Ambulance’s headquarters in Dafen, Llanelli, after the event.

Each sponsor costs £50, which includes a name on the Forget-Me-Not Castle, a thank you card and forget-me-not seeds. Loved one’s names will also be included on a plaque situated on the base of the castle as well as on the Charity’s Forget-Me-Not web page at walesairambulance.com.

Diana R Brook said she was delighted to be involved in the Castles in the Sky event and was looking forward to being involved in the Flowers of Remembrance campaign.

She said: “When you see how lovely the other Wild in Art trails have been across the country it is exciting to be getting involved with the project and bringing art to the city. I will hand paint every flower on to the castle and then add each individual name. The forget-me-not flower is so pretty and elegant.

“I think it will look beautiful and will have almost a ceramic feel. It is a lovely way to remember a loved one and will not only raise money, but also raise awareness as well as being involved in a historic event.”

All money raised will go towards the lifesaving Charity, which receives no government funding and relies on public donations to keep its helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road.

Every year, the Wales Air Ambulance needs to raise £8 million to deliver advanced critical care across Wales.

Siany Martin, Corporate Fundraiser at the Wales Ambulance, said: “We are extremely pleased to announce the launch of our Flowers of Remembrance campaign which will see a special Forget-Me-Not castle created in memory of loved ones who are sadly no longer with us.

“We are excited to work with the talented artist Diana R Brook, who will hand paint every individual name on to the petals of the beautiful forget-me-knot flowers and transform the castle into a beautiful floral work of art. By sponsoring a name, it will not only help raise funds for our life saving Charity, but it will also be a poignant and beautiful tribute to a special friend or family member.

“The Castles in the Sky event will see thousands of people descend on Swansea city centre over the summer and will showcase some of the most talented artists around. We feel the Forget-Me-Not Castle will be the perfect addition to the trail and will give friends and families the opportunity to come together and view their loved one’s name at what is expected to be one of the most spectacular art trails to come to Swansea.”

By adding your loved one’s name, you are adding a new chapter to their story, and their memory will live on in our work.
