Wales and Japan 2025 to celebrate the nations’ “deep-rooted connections”

WALES has enjoyed a close relationship with Japan since the 1970s, when Japanese companies first began investing in the country. Today, that connection is set to deepen as First Minister Eluned Morgan launches Wales and Japan 2025, a year-long campaign and the fifth in a series of country-focused initiatives by the Welsh Government.

The campaign aims to foster new economic and cultural partnerships between Wales and Japan, creating long-term benefits for both nations. The official launch will take place in Cardiff, hosted by the First Minister and the Japanese Ambassador, Hiroshi Suzuki, alongside a simultaneous event in Tokyo.

Japan’s strong economic ties with Wales are evident, with 70 Japanese companies currently operating in the country. These connections date back to the 1970s, marking decades of fruitful collaboration.

As part of the campaign, a £150,000 arts fund will soon be launched by Wales Arts International and British Council Wales, with support from the Welsh Government. This fund will support projects aimed at developing new artistic collaborations, engaging wider audiences, and strengthening existing partnerships between the two countries.

Additionally, the First Minister will confirm that Wales will participate in the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, taking place from April to October. Wales-focused events are planned, showcasing Welsh performers and promoting economic opportunities in Wales.

Highlighting the significance of the campaign, the First Minister remarked:
“Wales and Japan have deep-rooted connections stretching back to the 19th century, when Welsh innovation helped shape Japan’s transport network. Today, that partnership thrives in new and meaningful ways.

“2025 will be a year to start new conversations, develop relationships, and open a fresh chapter for mutual growth in key areas. I’m excited about the opportunities this year presents to celebrate and strengthen the economic, educational, cultural, and sporting ties between Wales and Japan.”

Wales and Japan 2025 follows previous campaigns including Wales in India 2024 and earlier initiatives focusing on France, Canada, and Germany.
