Firefighters put out about pensions

FIREFIGHTERS in the county have walked out as part of a four-hour strike in a row over pensions.

Members of the Fire Brigade Union (FBU) in Milford Haven, Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest joined colleagues on Wednesday from England and Wales striking from 12 noon to 4pm.

FBU members are also concerned about older firefighters who if they fail to meet the required fitness levels will lose their jobs and miss out on pension support.

The FBU spokesman said: “Although the government has previously claimed that older fire-fighters could be moved to less physically demanding roles, FBU research found only a handful of ‘redeployment’ opportunities in fire and rescue services, meaning mass sackings would be inevitable.”

There was real concern at the Haverfordwest station, where almost half of staff are over 50.
