A LOCAL haulage company has continued its support for the Wales Air Ambulance by donating £1,000 to the Charity.

The Owens Group UK head office is based a stone’s throw away from the Charity’s headquarters in Dafen, Llanelli.

The staff at Owens are used to seeing the Dafen-based lifesaving helicopter fly over its premises but little did they know that one day it would be called out to help the son of one of their employees.

Three-year-old Cian, the son of Operations Group Leader Gareth Thomas, was rushed to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff after he fell seriously ill and needed specialist treatment.

Ian Owen, Owens Group Operations Director, said: “As a local family business employing over 1,100 people, it was inevitable that one day one of our colleagues would require the fantastic support provided from the Wales Air Ambulance team.

“Gareth’s son fell seriously ill and had to be rushed to Cardiff for specialist emergency treatment. Without the rapid response that the Wales Air Ambulance provided things could have been very different. Gareth and his family are pleased to say that Cian has made a full recovery and they would like to extend their sincere gratitude to every team member for the emergency service provided to him. Keep up the great work Wales Air Ambulance and fly safely.”

This is not the first time that Owens has given its support to the Charity.

Three years ago, the haulage group re-painted a trailer with the Charity’s branding, aiming to promote its lifesaving work. In striking green, red and white, the trailer remains an unmissable sight on the roads it travels daily across the UK.

Mark Stevens, Wales Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager, said: “Thank you so much to Owens. Their ongoing support is incredible. The donation is much appreciated, especially as we’re now a 24/7 service. Every penny we make is vital to ensure that we can be there for people in need. To know that our service was there to help Cian and that he has now fully recovered is the greatest reward.”
