River Teifi search stood down

1THE SEARCH of the River Teifi at Cardigan for a female reported to have had entered the water from the bridge has been stood down this evening (Dec 6).

This follows an extensive, thorough and methodical search – but Dyfed-Powys Police say all search possibilities have now been exhausted.

A police spokesperson said: “Based on the information supplied to us by eye witnesses, this was a necessary and proportionate response, as there could have been a life at risk or a person to recover. But nothing suspicious has been found, we have no reports of a missing person in the area that would fit the description, and no further information has come to light to suggest that a female did actually enter the water.”

Chief Inspector Peter Roderick said: “Based on the information that was provided to us on Sunday 4th December, we had reason to believe that a female had potentially entered the river and come to harm. Enquiries were conducted with a number of witnesses, and a search commenced immediately to try and establish the facts and possibly save a life.

“As the search progressed, no further information or evidence has come to light, and we are content that we have exhausted all possibilities in respect of searching the river. As such we have therefore stood specialist resources down, these including the Marine Unit, victim recovery dogs and police divers. I thank all our partner agencies who assisted us with this search, namely the Fire and Rescue Services and HM Coastguard as well as the local community.”

Chief Inspector Roderick added: “Members of the public are asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101 if they have any information relating to the sighting of a female or person on the bridge at around 1pm on Sunday 4th December. Local enquiries are still continuing in an attempt to identify an adult female sighted on the bridge at the relevant time, and also a young female described as having brown hair, possibly with burgundy or red streaks, or red/ginger hair, who may be able to assist the police with this enquiry”.
