JAMES OWEN, a 30-year-old resident of Llanfechell, has been sentenced to a six-month suspended prison term after pleading guilty to possessing extreme animal pornography and an indecent image of a child.
The sentencing took place at Caernarfon Crown Court, where Owen faced serious charges related to disturbing content found on his devices. The court heard that the extreme animal pornography included videos depicting sexual acts with a tortoise, horse, and dog. Additionally, Owen possessed a single indecent image of a young girl, estimated to be between the ages of eight and ten.
Owen’s arrest in October 2022 stemmed from an investigation into the activities of Craig Lewis, a known paedophile. The Metropolitan Police uncovered online communications between Lewis and Owen, which led to the discovery of the incriminating materials on Owen’s phone.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Richard Edwards presented evidence that highlighted Owen’s troubling internet search history, suggesting a sexual interest in children. However, Owen claimed that the extreme animal pornography was sent to him “as a joke” and insisted he had not viewed the child abuse image.
In addition to the suspended sentence, Judge Timothy Petts ordered Owen to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service. He will also undergo six months of alcohol treatment and 45 days of rehabilitation work. Furthermore, Owen is required to register as a sex offender for seven years.
Defence attorney Sion ap Mihangel argued that Owen has shown genuine remorse and an “overwhelming sense of shame” regarding his actions. The court acknowledged that alcohol played a significant role in Owen’s offending behaviour.
Judge Petts remarked on the seriousness of the offences but noted a low risk of re-offending, emphasising the importance of rehabilitation alongside punishment.
The case has raised concerns within the local community about the prevalence of such disturbing content and its implications for public safety. As discussions continue about how best to address these issues, many residents are calling for increased awareness and preventative measures to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
