Controversial 3G pitch contract to be awarded behind closed doors

Conwy’s education department has applied to its own planning department, seeking permission for an all-weather artificial grass pitch at Ysgol y Creuddyn on Derwen Lane.

CONWY’S cabinet will meet behind closed doors next week to debate awarding the contract for the construction of a controversial 3G sports pitch at a Penrhyn Bay school.

In October Conwy County Council’s planning committee granted planning permission for the artificial grass pitch at Ysgol y Creuddyn.

Planning was granted for the sports pitch, despite Conwy receiving 567 objection letters, including two petitions, compared to just 39 letters of support.

Many of the letters came from residents who raised concerns about potential noise and light pollution, anti-social behaviour, and damage to the environment.

The new pitch will be built on the fields behind the school at Derwen Lane, Penrhyn Bay, together with six floodlights.

But some councillors said the Welsh medium school, which opened in 1981, was the only school without an outdoor all-weather facility.

The council’s cabinet will meet on Tuesday 11 March at Bodlondeb where councillors will discuss awarding the contract for ‘Ysgol y Creuddyn Sporting Hub development’.

But cabinet members will likely pass a resolution to exclude the press and public as the matter is considered financially sensitive.

Once the resolution is passed, councillors will also discuss the disposal of parking land at Glan y Mor Road, Abergele; the disposal of land at Chapel Street, Mochdre; and the project allocation of the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund.
