DOG walkers, joggers and cyclists are risking a serious accident if they brave a pitch-black promenade, says a concerned councillor.
Cllr Jo Nuttall says it’s so dark on a section of Rhos-on-Sea promenade that walkers feel unsafe and it is a matter of time before an accident occurs.
The lighting, Cllr Nuttall claims, has been faulty since the summer months, but despite several complaints, nothing has been done to resolve the matter.
Cllr Nuttall claims the unlit area of promenade starts just after the Cayley Arms pub and continues to below the festive tree of lights halfway across the embankment.
Cllr Nuttall said: “There is no lighting on the main promenade.
“It’s pitch-black. If you’re walking on that lower prom, from Happy Faces, the tourist information, all the way to the middle of the embankment, it is absolutely pitch-black.
“We’ve got people out walking, clubs running, people with dogs trying to pick up after them.
“It is absolutely pitch-black, and there is going to be an accident. It could be a pedestrian and a cyclist. I’m concerned people don’t feel safe. It’s putting off people from going out and doing their normal walk or exercise.”
She added: “This is something I’ve been emailing the council with, and I keep getting told it is teething problems.
“We had a date in November when it was supposed to be looked at, and we are not getting any updates now. Our emails are getting ignored.
“I’m getting messages and emails daily about this.
“People are really concerned. There was a toddler group, and two of the helpers walked down to a meal at the Cayley pub. These ladies had to wait for passing cars to shed enough light in order so that they could walk safely.
“The council aren’t doing anything. The council aren’t giving updates.
“We are not getting reasons. It looks like it is just being ignored. I’m really cross and concerned for residents.
“A lot of people like to walk at night, but females especially would avoid walking there after dark.”
A spokeswoman for Conwy County Council commented: “The streetlights aren’t working on a section of Rhos-on-Sea promenade due to a power supply fault. We have reported the problem to Scottish Power several times, and we are waiting for them to resolve the fault.
“Local members have been updated on this on-going issue.”
A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said: “We’re currently investigating the issues related to some of the streetlights on Rhos-on-Sea promenade.”
