Conwy Council to announce new Mochdre primary school

School governors are asking the cabinet to agree that the new Mochdre school should open on the current Ysgol Cystennin site.

A NEW Mochdre primary school will likely be announced next week.

On Tuesday Conwy’s cabinet will be tasked with rubber-stamping Ysgol Minafon.

In January Conwy’s cabinet approved proposals to amalgamate Ysgol Babanod Mochdre and Ysgol Cystennin in a bid to cut costs.

This means the two schools will close and a new school for Mochdre will be opened, named Ysgol Minafon.

The headteacher of the new school will be Ashley Bennett.

School governors are asking the cabinet to agree that the new school should open on the current Ysgol Cystennin site.

It is hoped the move will reduce the financial pressures of running two separate sites, helping to reduce the duplication of costs in relation to building maintenance, utility bills, cleaning resources, and IT equipment, as well as staffing, including mid-day supervision, caretaking, and breakfast supervision.

The cabinet will be presented with two options: either for pupils to remain to be taught on split sites under current arrangements; or that councillors vote in favour of the recommended single-site Ysgol Minafon, which would see all pupils taught on the current Ysgol Cystennin site ‘as soon as is practicable’.

If cabinet members agree, the new school will open on 28 April 2025.

The matter will be debated at the cabinet meeting at Bodlondeb on Tuesday 10 December.
