CONWY’S old police station could be partly demolished if plans to convert the building are approved next week.
Mr Alun Jones has applied to Conwy County Council’s planning committee, seeking permission to convert the station on Lancaster Square to form a mixed-use development.
The plans comprise of 19 apart-hotel studios and a retail/cafe space.
Planning officers have recommended the authority should be minded to grant permission.
The plans include repairs, alterations, and the partial demolition of the rear of the existing police station as well as the construction of extensions to form the new mixed-use development.
The police station is a grade-two listed building within Conwy’s walls, a World Heritage Site, but has been closed since May 2022, with police operations gradually scaled back over the years.
The main building was constructed in 1859 to the designs of prominent local architect John Lloyd (1793–1867), who also designed the police station building in Caernarfon.
But extensions were built onto the structure in the 19th century with further alterations added to the building circa 1940.
Conwy Town Council has raised an objection to the plans, citing the reasons of over-development, loss of the historic past of the building, and too many similar businesses in a small area.
Conwy County Council has also received five objections to the plans from residents.
Some of the objection letters cite neighbours’ loss of privacy, a lack of information, an over provision of holiday accommodation, the demolition of a listed building, construction noise, and lack of parking as reasons to refuse.
The plans are due to be discussed at a planning committee meeting on Thursday 28 November.
