CEREDIGION COUNTY COUNCIL has submitted an application for funding for its plans for Aberystwyth’s harbour.
If the application is successful there are plans to give the harbour a major makeover.
Applications had to be submitted by Friday, June 18, and the County Council’s Cabinet considered it just three days earlier (Jun 15).
The application has been made to the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, which can be accessed by all areas of the UK, which has a funding pot of up to £20m.
Ceredigion MP Ben Lake was said to be ‘well aware’ of the plans and is ‘supportive’ of the bid.
As part of the process all areas have been categorised and, with Ceredigion being placed into category 1, it means their application will be given a higher priority.
A report states that development would take place to the south of the town, include the harbour and all of the South Promenade.
A separate application is also being made which could see electric car charging points installed and the upgrading of existing transport routes in the area.
Further detailed work is currently being carried out on the first application to ensure it meets the needs of the programme.
Cabinet member for economy and regeneration Cllr Rhodri Evans said that the total of the initial bid was £4.5m.
Councillor Alun Williams said he welcomed the ideas for Aberystwyth but added there could have been a series of workshops involving local representatives to discuss how they could take the development forward.
He added that he appreciated the pressure the council’s department had been under but said ‘speed was of the essence’.
Another councillor stated he felt the process had been ‘a bit rushed’.
