School’s Colour Run fundraiser for Superheroes

PUPILS from a north Wales school have turned their theme of superheroes into a fundraiser for a lifesaving charity.

As part of the school theme, year 3 and 4 pupils from Ysgol Bro Elwern had been researching charities across the UK.

Due to the fact the children felt ‘more connected’ to the Wales Air Ambulance after seeing ‘the bright red helicopter flying over the school’, the children focussed their research on the Charity.

As well as tracking the helicopters as they flew overhead, the children discovered interesting facts about the Wales Air Ambulance and the work that the Charity does. They enjoyed finding out the distance that the Wales Air Ambulance travels to cover the whole of Wales.

The children organised a successful Colour Run in aid of the lifesaving Charity. Each child paid £2 to participate and raised a wonderful £104 for the Wales Air Ambulance.

Their proud teacher Emyr Gwynedd said: “We looked at many charities across the country; what the purpose of the charity is, and how they benefit people and raise awareness. We felt that the Wales Air Ambulance was closer to our hearts as the Charity has helped many family members, and we regularly see the bright red helicopter flying above our school.

“The kids worked in small groups planning different events on how to raise money for the Charity. As a class, we voted on the Colour Run event, as we were able to include the whole school and all the kids were involved. The class created posters promoting the event, made a route around the field, and managed powder stations.

“I am very proud of the class. They were really interested in the Charity and wanted to know how the whole organisation worked. It makes a difference when they enjoy the theme as they are able to produce excellent work. We truly appreciate all the work the Wales Air Ambulance does throughout Wales.”

Wales Air Ambulance is consultant-led, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and, if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury. For the patient, this can mean hours saved when compared to standard care and is proven to greatly improve survival and early recovery.

This advanced critical care includes the ability to administer anaesthesia, deliver blood transfusions and conduct minor operations, all at the scene of an incident.

As a pan-Wales service, its dedicated crews, regardless of where they are based, will travel the length and breadth of the country to deliver emergency lifesaving care.

The Wales Air Ambulance needs to raise £11.2 million every year to keep its helicopters in the air and its rapid response vehicles on the road.

As part of their literacy work, the Gwyddelwern-based school in Corwen, had the children write formal letters in Welsh to the Charity, thanking the staff for their hard work.

Debra Sima, a Regional Fundraising Manager for the Charity, said: “It was wonderful to receive the letters from the pupils following their successful fundraiser and research on the Wales Air Ambulance. We really appreciate their hard work in planning the event and making it successful.

“The children looked like they had a wonderful time during the Colour Run and raised a fantastic amount for the Wales Air Ambulance. They’ve turned their theme of superheroes into a wonderful way to fundraise for our lifesaving Charity.

“The Charity relies on donations, like these, to be able to continue to provide our lifesaving service for the people of Wales. All the children are now superheroes to us. Diolch yn fawr, pawb.”
