A WOMAN has died after a crash between an ambulance she was being carried in and a tipper van.

The crash happened at about 13:00 HRS on Thursday on the A470 near Talrafon, between Dolgellau and Llanelltyd in Gwynedd.

The driver of the non emergency ambulance was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor with serious injuries.

The woman died on her way to hospital and her family and the coroner have both been informed, North Wales Police have confirmed..

The man driving the tipper van was treated at the scene and was taken to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, with a leg injury.

North Wales Police has urged anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward.

The police released a statement as follows: “

Sadly a woman has died following a road traffic collision on the A470 in Meirionnydd earlier this afternoon (Thursday, 8th April).

“At 13:12 police were notified of a two-vehicle collision involving a tipper van and a Welsh Ambulance Service Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service vehicle near Talrafon, between Dolgellau and Llanelltyd.

“The emergency services were called to the scene and three people were treated and taken to hospital.

“The male driver of the Ambulance vehicle was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd with serious injuries and the male driver of the tipper van was taken to Ysbyty Bronglais in Aberystwyth with a leg injury.

“A woman, who was a patient in the ambulance vehicle, sadly died on her way to the hospital. Her family and the Coroner have been informed.

“The road remains closed at this time.Sergeant Raymond Williams of the Roads Policing Unit is appealing for anybody who may have witnessed the incident to contact officers: “We’d like to offer our sincerest sympathies to the woman’s family at this difficult time.

“Sadly this is now being investigated as a fatal road traffic collision, so we are appealing to anybody who may have information; or anybody who may have been travelling along the A470 and who may have dash cam footage, to contact us immediately.“

The A470 between Dolgellau and Llanelltyd remains closed at this time to allow colleagues from the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit to carry out their initial investigation, and we’d like to thank motorists for their cooperation and understanding.”
