FRESH off their Vanarama National League victory and subsequent promotion to the English Football League (EFL), goalkeeper Ben Foster has revealed his decision to postpone his retirement plans for another season and extend his stay at the Racecourse Ground. Foster, who came out of retirement to help Wrexham in their final eight games of the season, received a hero’s welcome upon his return to the club where he had previously played a key role in securing the LDV Vans Trophy 18 years ago.
With three clean sheets in eight games and a crucial penalty save in the final moments of a 3-2 win against title rivals Notts County, Foster’s cult hero status among Wrexham fans grew exponentially. After securing the league title with a victory over Boreham Wood, Foster expressed his eagerness to continue with the club and set his sights on achieving back-to-back promotions.
Speaking about his decision, Foster stated, “At the end of last season, it was obvious that I enjoyed being at the club, I loved being part of the team and everything that Wrexham stands for. I want to win another trophy…and now I want to win League Two. To be a small part in what is going to become a big machine in years to come is special.”
Despite the challenges of joining a squad late in the season, Foster received a warm welcome from both players and fans alike. Reflecting on his decision to come out of retirement, he affirmed that he had no regrets and praised the Wrexham supporters for their incredible passion and the club’s ambitious vision.
“It was madness. I’ve never seen a fanbase that is so wild and crazy,” Foster said. “I honestly believe the club can get to the Championship and the Premier League because they want to do it a different way. That’s what I stand for; the little person that doesn’t conform – it’s what I’ve been doing my last few years in football. That’s what I want to be a part of, and I’ve found that here at Wrexham.”
During his short spell with the club, Foster experienced several standout moments. The game against Notts County, in which he saved a penalty in the 96th minute to secure a 3-2 victory, was described as one of the top three best moments of his career. Foster also emphasized the physical demands of playing in the National League, particularly as a goalkeeper, but stated that he relished the challenges and battles on the pitch.
Beyond the playing field, Foster commended the Co-Chairmen of Wrexham FC, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, for their unique approach to club ownership. He highlighted their openness, support, and down-to-earth nature, stating, “It’s nice having owners like them because it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. You wouldn’t even know they owned the football club because they are such normal blokes.”
With Foster’s decision to extend his stay, Wrexham FC and its passionate fans can look forward to another season of exhilarating football as they aim to continue their upward trajectory. Foster’s experience, skill, and dedication will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the team’s pursuit of success, and he is eager to contribute to the club’s ambitions.
As the new season approaches, Wrexham fans eagerly await the return of their beloved goalkeeper and anticipate more memorable moments that will bring back the glory days to their historic club.
