WREXHAM Tennis Centre is thrilled to announce the launch of three brand-new padel courts in January 2025, marking the debut of this rapidly growing sport in North Wales. Supported by a £2 million investment from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, these courts are part of the Wrexham Tennis Centre Transformation Project.
Located just around the corner from the Racecourse, the new padel courts are expected to open to the public by the end of January 2025. This addition is part of a larger renovation project, which will also transform the centre’s reception area, changing rooms, café, gym, and 11 outdoor tennis courts.
Jon Ainge, Chair of the Trustees at Wrexham Tennis Centre commented: “We are incredibly excited to bring padel to the people of Wrexham. Padel is a fantastic social sport that appeals to a broad audience, and these courts are an important step in establishing Wrexham as a top-tier sports destination.”
If you’ve never heard of padel, here’s a quick introduction. Padel is a dynamic blend of tennis and squash, played in doubles on an enclosed court about one-third the size of a tennis court. Known for its accessibility and engaging gameplay, padel has gained popularity worldwide, attracting high-profile enthusiasts such as David Beckham, Jurgen Klopp, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi, as well as personalities like Serena Williams, Lando Norris, and even French President Emmanuel Macron.
While the UK has lagged behind other European countries in padel’s rise, with just over 500 courts compared to Spain’s 22,000, the sport is rapidly expanding. It is especially popular among young professionals in cities like London, Bristol, and Manchester as a way to socialise while staying active. This trend is now reaching more regions across the UK. Currently in Wales there is 11 courts all in South Wales, however the number is expected to triple by the end of 2025.
Although bookings are not yet open, enthusiasts can sign up on Wrexham Tennis Centre’s website to receive early notifications when bookings become available. You won’t need to be a member to book a court & if you have never played padel Wrexham will have coaches running sessions to teach you how to play.
These three courts will be only the sixth location in Wales to offer padel facilities and the first in North Wales, bringing a world-class sports experience to the Wrexham community for years to come.
