Sam Rowlands MS encourages constituents to help select the name for a new major attraction

SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is urging people to have their say on the new name for Wrexham’s new museum.

Construction work is already underway to transform the 167-year-old County Buildings in Wrexham city centre into a brand new national attraction, which will be the home of the Wrexham Museum and Football Museum Wales galleries.

Mr Rowlands, a keen supporter of the development said: “I have been following the progress of this fantastic and ambitious project since it was first known as the ‘Museum of Two Halves’ and I am really happy to see that once again the public being given the opportunity to have the final say.

“Wrexham, as we all know, is known all over the world because of its football success and as a keen supporter, I am really looking forward to having a national football museum here in the city.

“I would urge people to take the time to share in this historic opportunity to name this new major national attraction.”

Two names have been shortlisted for the new museum based on audience research across Wrexham and Wales as a whole, and now it’s your turn to choose your favourite.

  • Option 1: Tŷ Hanes – means “History House.” It’s a welcoming place to explore the history of Welsh football and Wrexham. The name makes it feel cosy, like a home full of stories to be told.
  • Option 2: Histordy – combines “histor” from the word history and “stordy” meaning storehouse in Welsh. In Welsh, words ending in “-dy” often mean special places, such as archifdy (archives), injândy (engine house), or goleudy (lighthouse). Histordy is easy to pronounce for both English and Welsh speakers.

The Museum is being developed by Wrexham Council’s museum team in association with museum designers, Haley Sharpe Design, architects Purcell and contractor SWG Construction.

Funding support for the new museum is provided by Wrexham Council, Welsh Government, National Lottery Heritage Fund, UK Government and the Wolfson Foundation. The new museum is set to open in 2026.
