Mabon ap Gwynfor elected in Dwyfor Meirionnydd

DWYFOR Meirionnydd has a new politician representing the seat at Cardiff Bay for the first time since 1999.

Dafydd Elis-Thomas, who won the seat for Plaid in 2016 but later left the party to sit as an independent will be replaced by Mabon ap Gwynfor for Plaid Cymru.

His grandfather, Gwynfor Evans, was a key member of Plaid Cymru and the party’s first member of parliament.

Mabon ap Gwynfor increased Plaid’s vote from 9,566 at the previous election to 11,490 in 2021.

Mabon ap Gwynfor spoke shortly after the results were announced to say he was delighted to have be selected. He said: “It’s such a historic constituency and the people here are fantastic so being selected as their Senedd member is a huge honour.”

Speaking of his grandfather he said: “He was such a big influence on me and on Plaid. We haven’t changed our principles at all since his time, it’s an honour and a pleasure to think about him.

“It’s a special day but it’s not my victory.

“It’s a victory for everyone who has supported the campaign, my family and those people who have fought over the years and have gone before me to make sure that Plaid Cymru continues to represent this area.”
