NEATH Port Talbot will pay its own tribute to the Windrush Generation in a special event at the Princess Royal Theatre, Port Talbot, on Tuesday, August 13th 2024 (11am – 2pm).
It will be one of many events across the UK commemorating the arrival in Britain in the summer of 1948 of the transport ship Windrush which brought 800 people from the Caribbean to Britain.
During the 1940s – 1970s, an estimated half a million people from the Caribbean journeyed to the United Kingdom to support with the post-Second World War reconstruction efforts.
Events are now held every year to mark the the significant contribution the people of the “Windrush Generation” and their descendants have made, and continue to make, to life in Wales and across the UK.
The Princess Royal Theatre event, funded by the Welsh Government, will be hosted by equality and diversity advocate Kemba Hadaway-Morgan MSC, BA.
The event will feature Caribbean food and music, poetry readings, short films, a performance by Choirs for Good, displays and information stands with guest speakers including the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Cllr Matthew Crowley.
Cllr Crowley said: “Neath Port Talbot is fortunate to be home to a community of individuals from the Windrush Generation whose contributions have enriched our county borough and I look forward to celebrating their arrival here.
“I opened an initial Windrush event in Port Talbot Library last year to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the ship and that event has now grown to what will be an even bigger celebration at the Princess Royal Theatre.”
The Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Cllr Steve Hunt, added “This event gives us the opportunity to thank members of the Windrush generation for helping to shape our region and the UK as it is now. They and their descendants have left a legacy and we should be all proud of what they have accomplished.”
