THE search for missing Newport father Marcus Barter has ended in tragedy, as his body was discovered over the weekend, nearly six weeks after he was last seen. The 30-year-old had disappeared on August 1, sparking a massive search effort by family, friends, and local authorities.
The Barter family, who have been leading appeals for help in locating Marcus, have expressed their deep sorrow following the heartbreaking discovery. Marcus’ brother, Simon Barter, who played a prominent role in coordinating search efforts, confirmed the tragic news: “It is with the deepest of sadness we are in a position to say sadly Marcus is no longer with us.”
Simon went on to request privacy for the grieving family. “The family is asking for peace and space to feel their grief and come to terms with our horrific loss. As much as sympathy messages are appreciated, we ask they are not sent to the family at this painful time.”
In a touching tribute, Simon invited those wishing to pay their respects to lay flowers at Wentwood bluebells, a place of fond memories for the Barter family. “Thank you to each and every single individual who has been active on social media, sharing posts, putting posters up, and searching the area relentlessly,” he added.
Marcus Barter was last captured on CCTV at around 2:30pm on Coed y Caerau Lane, on the day of his disappearance. His car was later found parked at the top of Wentwood, an ancient woodland near the lane. Disturbingly, his mobile phone was left inside the vehicle, with the last call traced to a phone mast near where his car was found, just an hour after he was last seen.
Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley, who was leading the investigation, previously appealed to the public for information regarding Marcus’ last known whereabouts. “From reviewing CCTV footage, we know several vehicles used the road at around the time Marcus was last seen on August 1. If you drove along this road or were in the area between 1:30pm and 4:30pm that Thursday, and especially if you have dashcam footage, please contact us.”
The discovery brings a tragic conclusion to a six-week search that gripped the Newport community, leaving family and friends in mourning over the devastating loss.
