A NEW completion date for a £2m school extension in Bridgend county has been confirmed despite delays to the project of over a year.
The plans which will see a four-classroom extension added on to the existing site of Coety Primary School are now set to be completed in time for the start of the 2026-27 school year.
The proposals were approved after a report highlighted how there was a need for extra spaces at the school which relocated to a new-build site at Parc Derwen in 2015. This was said to be a result of higher pupil-yield rates from new housing developments nearby.
The work will eventually see the school’s capacity increase from 420 to 525 places for pupils aged between four and 11 years old with the existing school yard also extended and games courts painted on outdoor spaces.
The plans for the £1.98m project were first approved by members of the council in October 2023 and were meant to be completed by the spring of 2025. However this date was later pushed back due to “resourcing issues, which have since been resolved”.
Councillor Martyn Jones who is cabinet member for education said: “This again just illustrates that despite rising costs we are committed to providing the best educational facilities within Coety Primary School and for the wider community and I’m sure all at Coety will be delighted with this news this afternoon.”
Officers speaking at the meeting added that they had also consulted with the schools governing body who had given no objections to the revised date of the opening for September 1, 2026.
