A COMMUNITY council in Bridgend says it is looking to take charge of additional open and green spaces as part of a new strategy.

The draft green spaces strategy, which was put together by Coity Higher Community Council will now ask residents for feedback on how they want to see parks and open spaces, currently under the stewardship of the council, managed in the future.

The community council currently runs a number of parks in the area such as Coity Village Field, Heol West Plas Allotments, Tan-yr-allt play area, Great Western Avenue play area, and Joslin Road play park.

However, they say they are also interested in taking charge of another eight  public spaces in the area going forward through the use of asset transfers.

The draft plans say they have now lodged “formal expressions of interest” in places such as Great Western Avenue playing fields, Litchard playing fields, Litchard community centre, and Parc Derwen playing fields.

They are also seeking an agreement with Bridgend County Borough Council to maintain parts of the ‘Black path’ green space between Litchard and Sarn.

The plans noted that there were “various reasons why the community council should take over these assets” saying with cuts faced by Bridgend County Borough Council it meant that maintenance of play parks and green spaces has “significantly diminished”.

The community council will now consult with members of the public over the potential plans before developing a more detailed plan for each area. You can view the full strategy which is now available to members of the public here:
