Bridgend resident shaved off decade old dreads to save dogs in need

BRIDGEND resident Samantha Buca has undertaken an extraordinary challenge to support Hope Rescue, a dog rescue centre based in South Wales. Samantha, who has cherished her 60 dreadlocks for nearly a decade, made the bold decision to shave them off Wednesday (Jan 1) to raise funds for the charity. Her courageous act has already surpassed its original goal of £2,000, with £3,036 raised so far.

Hope Rescue plays a vital role in providing care for stray dogs, assisting pet owners in crisis, and finding homes for abandoned or unwanted animals. Samantha’s initiative is part of a larger effort to help fellow fundraiser Nicole Vanetia Steele achieve her ambitious £20,000 target for the charity.

Samantha’s dedication to the cause is truly inspiring. She said, “I am a pretty fearless person anyway and wanted to do something drastic. I love my dreads but am willing to sacrifice them to help the animals that will inevitably be dumped after the Christmas period. I wanted to do my bit, and this is the only way I can see fit.”

Hope Rescue, located in Llanharan, South Wales, works tirelessly to care for dogs in need. They take in all strays from four local authorities, regardless of breed, age, or medical condition. The charity also provides temporary respite care for pet owners in crisis, such as those facing homelessness or fleeing domestic abuse. On average, it costs £500 to care for and prepare each dog for adoption. Some dogs require even more resources due to medical or behavioural issues, but Hope Rescue ensures no dog is left behind. The charity relies heavily on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue its lifesaving work.

There are numerous ways to support Hope Rescue and Samantha’s incredible effort. Donating to Samantha’s GoFundMe campaign can make a real difference in helping stray and abandoned dogs find their forever homes. By sponsoring Samantha’s brave act, you’re directly contributing to the work of Hope Rescue.

If you’re looking for a more hands-on way to help, consider adopting a dog, fostering a dog, or sponsoring a kennel. Fostering provides a more comfortable environment for dogs who may struggle in a kennel setting, and sponsorships help cover the costs of care. Regular monthly donations, known as becoming a Hope Hero, provide a reliable income for the charity, enabling them to plan ahead and continue their essential work. One-off donations can also be made through various methods, including texting HOPERESCUE followed by your donation amount to 70450, or donating via PayPal, cheque, or over the phone.

Volunteering with Hope Rescue is another rewarding way to get involved. By joining a community of like-minded individuals, you can develop new skills and gain the satisfaction of helping dogs in need.

Hope Rescue also provides valuable advice on their website to help dog owners. From keeping dogs calm during fireworks to guidance for XL Bully owners, their resources are designed to support pet owners and their furry companions.
