PUPILS across Wales were hoping all their hard work had paid off today as many across the country flocked in to schools to pick up their GCSE results.

Last week an overall dip was seen in grades when it came to A-level results with a similar scenario expected for today’s GCSE’s.

However, this news didn’t deter pupils from Bridgend’s Pencoed Comprehensive who arrived at the school with a sense of excitement to pick up their results on a rainy August morning.

Maddison Smith-Cox, 15,  from Pencoed got a mixture of B’s C’s and D’s in her GCSE results today. She said: “I’m quite happy as I had better results than I expected in the end and I was very proud to see what I got. I wasn’t nervous at all in collecting them but I am glad to have it done.”

Mum Sadie added: “We are very proud of her for what she achieved today. It’s of course been a very different experience for kids doing GCSE’s now than it was before the pandemic and we can’t wait to see what’s next for her in the future.”

William Trenbath, 16, and Nate Strange from Pencoed also picked up results today and said they were more than happy with them.

William received 4 A’s 2 B’s and 4 C’s and said : “I feel pretty good with what I’ve got here today and it’s very exciting. I’m from here in Pencoed and now I know I can move on to do my A levels here next year.”

Adele Gale, 16, from Pencoed gained a mixture of A’s A star’s and a C. She said:

“It was really nerve racking this morning coming to get the results but now I’m relieved. The hard work all paid off. I definitely want to come back to sixth form next year but I’m still not exactly sure of what I want to do long term.”

Ellie Mae Norris said she was over the moon with her GCSE results. She said: “I had excellent results and I’m really pleased. I want to come back to sixth form next year then hopefully go to university where I want to study to be a structural architect. I will be celebrating over the weekend and to be honest I’m just glad it’s all done.”

Speaking after the results were given Councillor Martyn Jones, cabinet member for education and youth services in Bridgend said: “I’d like to congratulate pupils on their hard work.  It is great to see lots of students achieving fantastic results and I have no doubt that the class of 2024 will be successful in their future endeavours.

“There are now many paths open to young people in Bridgend County Borough, whether it is sixth form or college, training or apprenticeships or going onto employment – it’s great to hear about their future plans.

“I’d also like to give a huge thank you to all teachers and support staff for dedicating themselves to ensure young people across the county borough are set up for success.”
