APPROVAL has been granted by Bridgend Council for the demolition of a “redundant and dilapidated building” in the Princess of Wales Hospital grounds.

The small building which is said to be based on the eastern fringe of the hospital was previously used as a former nurses’ teaching block and is surrounded on all sides by other buildings at the site.

Plans say the building, which consists of a flat-roofed wooden-framed structure with fibreglass insulation, has been left empty and derelict for around 15 years.

A report added the roof of the building was “leaking badly” with warped and exposed boards and the ceiling having collapsed in some areas exposing wooden beams.

Approval to tear down the site was given the go-ahead by the local planning authority on October 8 following a full planning application was submitted in September by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

It comes after a critical incident that shut an entire top floor of the hospital this month after a survey revealed extensive damage to the roof, which has been caused by heavy rainfall resulting in leaks throughout the building.

The move is currently expected to have an effect on the hospital’s operations as it is understood the closure has affected the hospital’s surgical theatre. The site’s maternity unit was also shut in September 2024 for a planned 12-week period of urgent work.
