THE LATEST report from Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) has found that a range of improvements have
been introduced across Children’s Services at Bridgend County Borough Council.

Carried out following recommendations that were previously identified as part of a formal inspection in
2022, the check confirmed evidence of progress across all eleven of the improvement areas.

This includes significant improvements in both managerial oversight, and work designed to ensure that
the voices of local children are sought, heard and recorded.

Other areas where improvements were confirmed include workforce recruitment and retention, staff
support, supervision and training, the provision of information, advice and assistance, and ensuring that
people consistently feel listened to and are treated with dignity and respect.

Staff who spoke to inspectors reported that they were well supported by managers, and improvements
were also evident in arrangements for supervised contact between children and their families,
compliance with statutory child protection and safeguarding responsibilities and learning from reviews
and audits.

Inspectors noted the progress made to date and concluded that further improvements are needed in
some areas, especially the recruitment of a permanent workforce and how the council works with
partners in identifying and responding to exploitation.

Councillor Jane Gebbie, Cabinet Member for Social Services and Early Help, said: “This improvement
check from Care Inspectorate Wales is highly encouraging, and demonstrates our ongoing commitment
towards strengthening the overall effectiveness and resilience of our services for children.

“We will continue to work with CIW to introduce further improvements across the service, and to ensure
that we promote and protect the well-being of children and families.”
