PLANS to refurbish a former hotel in Porthcawl town centre and turn it into apartments have been submitted.

The application by housing association Beacon Cymru could see the creation of a new mixed-use residential and commercial retail building on the corner of John Street and Dock Street.

The plans say they would look to develop 22 affordable apartments with retail space at the former Porthcawl Hotel, located in the town centre around a five-minute walk from the town’s esplanade.

The hotel is a Victorian building said to have been built between 1887 and 1897.

The plans read: “The development will include new affordable apartments which will occupy the first floor to the fourth floor. The ground floor will be rejuvenated with more structured commercial units.

“Along with the existing building receiving restoration to the existing architectural detailing and the new extension to the upper floors to generate internal space and external order to the rooflines.”

The plans will now go before Bridgend County Borough Council’s planning department in the coming months, and follows a separate proposal for 44 apartments at the site of a former Porthcawl café which was once described as being the pillar of the community, Fulgoni’s.

It also comes weeks after the launch of the Porthcawl masterplan which could see a number of large-scale developments proposed for the seaside town over the next 10 years, including the creation of 1,100 new homes as well as shops, cafés, restaurants and leisure attractions.
