PLANS to turn a former high street pub near the centre of a Llynfi Valley town into housing have been submitted to the local council.
The proposals given to the local authority could see the former Victoria pub in Maesteg turned into seven accommodation units if approved in the coming months.
It would see the site, located in Commercial Street, Maesteg, turned in to two, two-bedroom apartments and five one-bedroom apartments along with bin storage and cycle provision if given the go-ahead by council bosses.
Plans handed in by developers at ST Planning say the two-storey red brick property, which is described as being a “redundant public house within the centre of Maesteg” has currently been empty for over eight years.
The plans read: “This proposal is to convert the existing building into 2 no. two bedroom apartments and 5 no. one bedroom apartments.
A bin store and cycle provision are proposed to be located to the rear. It should be clearly noted that no significant external alterations are proposed to the existing building fabric and fenestration.”
They added: “Material consideration should also be given to the fact that due to the current poor condition of the building, it is considered that the proposed development will seek to improve the overall visual appearance of the building as well as the re-use of a vacant building which is currently having a negative impact on the Conservation Area.”
The application comes as the local authority has outlined a number of town centre regeneration projects across the county borough, such as the Maesteg town hall re-development, and plans for a new college in Bridgend, with discussions also being held on how to bring vacant town centre buildings back in to use.
The plans for the former Maesteg pub will now go before Bridgend Council’s development control department for a decision in the coming months.
