Caerau earn win over Cwmamman

HAVING had a two week break due to the poor weather Cwmamman United travelled to Cardiff to take on in form Caerau Ely in an Ardal South West league match.

After negotiating the rugby-bound traffic pretty well Cwm arrived hoping they could handle the powerful Caerau attack just as well while hopefully creating good opportunities of their own.

For a while it looked like that was the case as the midfield of Charlie Davies, Ross Davies and Kyle Ashford were ensuring Cwm had a good share of the game while building attacks that also tested the Caerau defence.

In difficult wet conditions both sides were looking to open the game up but it eventually took a mistake to open the scoring when a cross from the left saw Cwm’s Chris Dunkley mis handle and Hywel Davies toe poked it home .

Cwm immediately came back launching attacks with Calem Rees and Kieran Richards pressing hard but they then quickly conceded a free kick outside their box. Calum Bateman stepped up and fired the ball like a rocket past the defensive wall for an unlikely 2-0 in the 30th minute.

The game ebbed and flowed and Just before half time a patient build up by Cwm saw Gwion Howell twist and skillfully stroke the ball past Josh Murray in the Caerau goal for 1-2.

Cwm were now back in the game and both sides pushed for that critical goal. Ronan Templeton and Grant Rees were resolute against the strong Caerau strikers limiting their chances and Cwm could sense an equaliser.

Unfortunately late on as they looked to build from the back some hesitancy in their own goal area in the 85th minute saw Liam Bishop pounce for the goal that clinched the match.

An even match that swung on key errors not helped in the difficult conditions. Cwm will use next week’s break to consider how they can turn these good performances into much needed points.
