COLEG GWENT has set out plans for a “state-of-the-art” redevelopment of its Crosskeys campus.
The college hopes the phased project, if approved, will include the construction of more “modern” teaching facilities, and will help it meet its climate ambitions.
It has applied to Caerphilly County Borough Council for full planning permission for a first phase of works, which documents show could be completed in 2027.
That work will include a new three-story teaching block, a new “energy centre” to heat the site, and landscaping changes to create a “campus heart”.
The application also seeks outline planning permission for three later phases of construction, which at this stage are expected to be completed between 2029 and 2035.
Documents submitted by agents DPP Planning show nine buildings currently at the campus would be demolished, if the project goes ahead.
The proposal for a phased approach will “ensure the campus remains operational during development, minimising disruption to education”, the agents said.
“Our vision for the Crosskeys campus redevelopment is to transform it into a state-of-the-art learning environment that aligns with our net-zero carbon commitments,” said a Coleg Gwent spokesperson.
“The redevelopment aims to create an enriching and inspiring space that boosts learners’ aspirations.
“By providing a modern and innovative setting, including a three-storey teaching building with cutting-edge facilities, we aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to achieve their full potential and succeed in their future careers.”
DPP Planning said a pre-application consultation period, held in 2024, found “overall, public support was positive”, and “both local residents and staff expressed enthusiasm for the project”.
The application is currently out for consultation, and can be viewed on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website under reference 25/0088/OUT.
