A NEW affordable housing project has been approved for Pontywaun.

The vacant Castle Court sheltered housing complex, at the junction of Silver Street and Twyncarn Road, will be demolished to make way for 16 new homes.

Caerphilly County Borough Council, which is leading the project, said the redevelopment will include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

At a planning committee meeting, on Wednesday March 12, senior officer Carwyn Powell said Castle Court is “no longer functionally viable”.

The development will be split over two L-shaped blocks, which are two storeys in height and finished in brickwork.

No members of the public objected to the proposals during a recent consultation period.

Members of the committee voted unanimously to grant planning permission, subject to conditions.

Cllr Roy Saralis, chairing the meeting, said he was “pleased to see a development of this kind”.

“It’s much-needed,” he added.
