A LARGE-SCALE emergency operation unfolded this morning (Tuesday, January 28) in Newport after a car was discovered submerged in a canal.
The vehicle was spotted by a member of the public, who promptly reported it to the police at approximately 9:50am.
Emergency crews, including police and rescue teams, rushed to the scene. A helicopter was also seen circling the area as part of the response.
Police have confirmed that no one was inside the car when they arrived.
A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a call at about 9:50am reporting that a car had been seen in the canal. There was no one inside, and the car is now being recovered.”

The circumstances surrounding how the vehicle ended up in the canal remain under investigation.
