Cardiff partnerships developer inspires children at local careers fair

LEADING partnerships developer Lovell recently made an appearance at a careers fair held at a school based near The Mill in Canton, Cardiff. Lovell Homes at Cardiff

West High School careers fair Meriel Gough, Community Development Co-ordinator at Lovell, and Otis Simpson, who was recently promoted to Trainee Site Manager at The Mill, both attended the careers fair at Cardiff West High School, which is where Otis completed his secondary school education.

The pair spoke to approximately 40 students aged 16 to 18 about what a career in construction is like, all of the different roles available and what steps are needed to get started.

They also provided interactive activities for the students to help them understand more about the field.

The careers fair is the first of a series of career support activities Lovell will be offering this school via Career Wales, a government organisation that offers professional career planning.

Margo Farbrace, Trainee Business Engagement Advisor at Careers Wales, said:

“The careers fair was an excellent opportunity for the students to broaden their horizons and learn more about the different careers they may like to pursue in the future.

“Having a wide variety of employers in attendance is an essential component so every business who sends representatives is greatly appreciated”.

Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: “We were absolutely delighted to be able to take part in the careers fair at Cardiff West High School.

“The construction sector is filled with a wide variety of interesting and rewarding jobs that many students wouldn’t have considered or heard about by the time they leave school, so it was very important to us to be able to share that knowledge with them.

“The communities we build in are very important to us at Lovell and we look forward to doing more work in the future to help students find a career they can thrive in.”

The Mill includes 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell, which have now sold out, and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association – for Tirion Homes.

The scheme is going ahead with the support of the Welsh Government and financial backing from the Principality Building Society, and is being developed by Tirion Homes in partnership with Lovell.
