Candidates announced for Splott by-election following former lord mayor’s passing

ALL of the names of the people who will be running for a seat on Cardiff Council in an upcoming by-election have been published.

The former lord mayor of the city, Jane Henshaw, who was also a Labour ward member for Splott, died in September.

A by-election will be held for her seat on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Among the candidates who have put their names forward is Jane Henshaw’s daughter, Anny Anderson. She will be running as a Labour candidate.

Here is the full list of candidates who will be running in the Splott by-election next month:

  • Anny Anderson (Labour)
  • Cadan ap Tomos (Liberal Democrats )
  • Lee Canning (Reform UK)
  • Sam Coates (Green Party)
  • Kyle ‘Cudgie’ Cullen (Propel)
  • Leticia Gonzalez (Plaid Cymru)
  • Tomos Llewelyn (Conservative)

Once the polls have closed, the votes will be counted at County Hall in Atlantic Wharf.

The current ward members who represent Splott are Cllr Huw Thomas (Labour) and Cllr Ed Stubbs (Labour).

Cllr Huw Thomas is also the leader of Cardiff Council.

This will be the second by-election for a Cardiff Council ward seat this year.

The last one took place in Grangetown in April after former Labour councillor for the area, Abdul Sattar, died.

In that by-election, Abdul Sattar’s widow, Cllr Waheeda Sattar, won by 1,470 votes.

The passing of her late husband was announced in February and was followed by an outpouring of tributes by members of the community and city councillors.

The voter turnout in Grangetown then was 21% – that is 3,106 voters in total.

Plaid Cymru/Greens/Common Ground, the Conservatives and Propel all had candidates running in the by-election.

There were also two independent candidates.

If you aren’t registered to vote, but want to do so in the Splott by-election, you must apply by midnight on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

Applications can be made online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Amendments, cancellations or applications of postal votes must reach the electoral registration officer at Room 263, County Hall, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff, CF10 4UW by 5pm on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

Applications to vote by emergency proxy at the by-election must reach the electoral registration officer at the same address by 5pm on Thursday, December 5.
